These days, making a fashion statement seems important when choosing a shell garment. So here's a fashion statement for your consideration: "I am prepared to dress in a fashion that will keep me comfortable in the most demanding outdoor environments."
Having designed and made outdoor equipment since 1973, we have seen products come and go. Some that went away went for good reason -- replaced by superior offerings. However, it seems that some products which offered genuine functionality went away just because of changing styles, or because the level of demand went below what manufacturers and retailers found profitable.
So we started thinking: What if we started a "werks" that would bring back the shin-length mountain cagoule, updated with today's WPB fabrics and taped seams, along with our unique design that minimizes seams and lets water run right off? Maybe we could find serious outdoorspeople around the world who aren't altogether happy with the wind and rain shells available to them elsewhere.
And so Northwerks was born. We are pleased that you found us.
We're located in the Great Lakes Region of the United States, west of Lake Michigan and south of the Chain of Lakes in northern Illinois.
We encourage you to visit the web sites of kindred spirits Rivendell Mountain Works for their fabulous Jensen packs www.rivendellmountainworks.com and Bruce Johnson's "History of Gear" project at www.oregonphotos.com/Backpacking-Revolution1.
Below: A couple of our cagoules in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, soon to be used in an overnight bivouac in a dark and stormy night on the Grand. (Circa 1979; nowadays we use finer-looking climbers to model our cagoules.)
